Chromium contributes to normal macronutrient metabolism and maintains normal levels of blood glucose.

Chromium is an essential mineral, which is present in concentrations of twenty parts of chromium per billion parts of blood. The body contains about 6 mg of this mineral, while the blood contains about 20 parts per billion. Chromium in the diet is essential for both animals and humans.
An important role has recently been attributed to this mineral in the metabolism of carbohydrates. Chromium stimulates the activity of enzymes responsible for the metabolism of glucose, which is used as energy and for the synthesis of fatty acids and cholesterol. Chromium has been shown to increase the effectiveness of insulin, and has the ability to transform glucose, preventing hypoglycaemia (too much insulin) or diabetes (little insulin).
Chromium supplements are mainly used in the treatment of hypoglycemia, diabetes, hypercholesterolemia and raised triglyceridaemia, to promote weight loss and as a treatment against acne.
